An ion is an electrically charged particle. Ions which are positively charged are called "cations," and those which are negatively charged are called "anions." When ions contact other particles, they sometimes can transfer their charge to the other particle. This effect is used in ion-deposition printing, where an ion stream charges a blank page for printing.
